David Maidment院士访问环境学院，畅谈美国国家水模型

应环境科学与工程学院院长郑春苗教授邀请，世界著名水文学家David Maidment教授访问了环境学院，并于2016年10月19日下午在国际会议厅作了题为“National Water Model of the United States”的南山环境讲坛第31讲。报告由郑春苗院长主持，环境学院40余位师生到场与Maidment院士进行了交流。

Maidment教授现为德克萨斯大学奥斯汀分校水资源研究中心讲席教授、美国工程院院士，其主要研究方向为地理信息系统在水资源研究中的应用。本次报告中，Maidment院士详细介绍了美国最近投入运行的全国水模型的研发过程及相关情况。

2016年8月16日，美国天气预报中心开始运行由美国国家大气和海洋管理局与德克萨斯大学等单位联合开发的全国水模型。这一模型可以作为预测全国河川覆盖面积达520万平方公里的270万条河段中流量变化的工具。而这项功能是基于覆盖美国大陆的1公里网格上的土壤水分连续计算得到的。从此之后，水也可以像天气一样，被持续的、局地尺度上被预测。在过去两年中，Maidment教授牵头组织了德克萨斯大学与美国国家水中心的合作，来一同构建这个全国水模型。他们还建立了一个洪水实时映射系统，来通过全国水模型计算出的排泄量转译出洪水水深和泛滥范围。

最后，Maidment教授还与大家一同探讨了在中国建立全国水模型的可能性。他希望与南科大环境学院的研究人员合作完成这一工作。早在2009年的一次全国地下水会议上，郑春苗教授就做了一个题为“中国水模型的初步设想”的主题报告。

报告之后，Maidment教授在郑春苗院长的陪同下，访问了刚刚建成的南科大高性能计算和可视化平台。

报告人简介：David R. Maidment is the Hussein M. Alharthy Centennial Chair in Civil Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin where he has been on the faculty since 1981. He received his Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Engineering with First Class Honors from the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand, and his MS and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Texas, he was a research scientist at the Ministry of Works and Development in New Zealand, and at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Vienna, Austria, and he was also a Visiting Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University.
Dr Maidment is a specialist in surface water hydrology, and in particular in the application of geographic information systems to hydrology. In 2016, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering "For development of geographic information systems applied to hydrologic processes".
