2018-05-16

On May 12, SUSTech’s School of Environmental Science and Engineering (SESE) hosted a forum themed “Creating World-Class Academia, Servicing Beautiful China.” Many Class A universities under the “Double First-Class” plan sent Deans from their Schools of Environment from across the country and joined other leading environmental science experts from Guangdong.

University Council Chairman Guo Yurong opened the forum. She welcomed the assembled experts, and sincerely hoped that the forum would foster new ideas for education in environmental science while contributing to more original research findings in this highly important academic field.

Academician and Dean of College of Engineering Xu Zhenghe briefly introduced recent developments at SUSTech, while SESE Dean Zheng Chunmiao made an in-depth presentation of the school’s development. Zheng wished the School could take part in “creating world-class academia” and “servicing beautiful China.”

Academician Tao Shu from Peking University then presented a special report on “Air Pollution and Simulation of Its Effects Based on High-Resolution Emissions.” Academician Hu Chunhong from the Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR) followed Tao, and talked about “Ecological Construction and Yellow River’s Water-Sand Changes in the Loess (Huangtu) Plateau.”

Dean Zhu Tong from Peking University, Assistant Dean from Tsinghua University, Dean Ma Jun from Harbin Institute of Technology, Dean Dai Xiaohu from Tongji University, Dean Ren Hongqiang from Nanjing University and Dean Chen Baoliang all came on stage. As deans and assistant deans of prestigious environmental programs from across the country, they joined other experts to share a variety of experiences. The panels spoke at length about the development of their respective schools and engaged in many lively discussions about curriculum design, talent education, evaluation system, resource allocation and policy reform:
