MEE Approves of Building Water Pollution Prevention and Control Laboratory at SUSTech

2018-05-14

Recently, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China (MEE) officially permitted SUSTech to build a water pollution prevention and control laboratory. The laboratory will focus on surface and underground water in state-protected drainage basins, and it is the first national-level laboratory at SUSTech.

Laboratory leader and Dean of School of Environmental Science and Engineering Zheng Chunmiao will undertake a three-stage drainage-basin-based research project, aimed at water pollution prevention technology and the need of related industry development:

  1. (1) Evolutionary rules of water environmentin target drainage basins; the mechanism of reciprocal action, a coupling mechanism, as well as effects of ecological environment and its control mechanism between surface water and underground water;
  2. (2) Monitoring and research of surface and underground water pollution in target drainage basins, comprehensive prevention, and contro lof water pollution, environment-friendly equipment,and advanced materials;
  3. (3) Risk assessment of surface and underground water pollution in targetdrainage basins, health effect evaluation and optimized management and control technologies.

The laboratory strives to become a world-class research platform, standardized testing center, and future national key laboratory, and contribute to the improvement of water environment and water pollution prevention/control technologies in China.

Since its establishment in May 2015, the School of Environmental Science and Engineering has been prioritizing its research on hydrology and water resources. They have particularly focused on a variety of environmental matters such as environmental biogeochemistry, water pollution and treatment, soil and groundwater remediation, solid waste disposal and utilization, atmospheric chemistry and pollution control, ecological system assessment, environmental remote sensing, and global environmental change.The School is also equipped with high-level faculty and researchers who have undertaken over 80 research projects with funding of over 30 million USD, published more than 170 SCI academic papers, released eight monographs, and established multiple municipal and provincial laboratories.
