The Summing-up Meeting of Integrated Project of Midstream and Downstream in Heihe River Basin of National Natural Science Foundation of China Major Research Plan is Held in SUSTech

2016-09-02

Integrated project of midstream and downstream in Heihe river basin ispart of National Natural Science Foundation of China major research plan “integratedprojects research of eco-hydrological process in Heihe river basin”. On October 14 of 2015, its end-year summing-up meetingis held successfully in the SUSTech and hosted by Professor Zheng Chunmiao, leader of this project and dean of Environmental Science and EngineeringCollege, South University of Science and Technology of China.

All cooperating organizations relevant to this projecthave attended this meeting for exchange and summary of this project. Professor Zheng Chunmiao, leader of this project, introduced general researchstatus of this project from 2013 to now as well as the next objective andrelevant arrangements. Later on, leaders of various subprojects including ZhengYi, Tian Yong from SUSTech, Liu Jie from Peking University, Huang Yongmei from BeijingNormal University, Mao Xiaomin from China Agricultural University, Zou Songbingfrom Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute, ChineseAcademy of Sciences and Huang Wenrui from Tongji University reported theresearch status of their subprojects and work plans of the next year respectively.

Since the project was launched in March 2013, greatprogress has been made on the integrated project of midstream and downstream inHeihe river basin: this project has established and verified the surfacewater/ground water coupling model in midstream and downstream after collectingand organizing large amount of research materials, including critical ecologicalmodule and hydrodynamic module. It has also published nearly 20 SCI papers oninternational first-class journals regarding water resources (including WaterResources Research, Environmental Modeling and Software, Hydrological Processesetc.) and explained a series of achievements obtained by research team atrespects such as environment modeling, mechanism analysis of ecological andhydrological processes and the regulation of water resources.

Key emphasis in thenext work has been determined in the meeting, including: further update themodel and complete the software development of model’s interface; complete andverify dual-directional coupled between general ecological module GEHM and hydrologicalmodel; complete classification system and parameterization scheme of eco-hydrologyin Heihe river basin and provide the integrated project with more detailed eco-hydrologicalregionalization and parameter set; complete and verify crop eco hydrologicalmodel CropSPAC as well as distributed simulation of oasis crop ecologicalhydrological processes in midstream, build distributed parameter database forthe model; complete the establishment and verification of downstream desertvegetation module DVSim and perfect ecological parameter set of desertvegetation based on plenty of new field test data; further improve the hydrodynamicmodel of the river and complete coupling and verification of river’s hydrodynamicmodel and eco-hydrological model.

Yang Dawen, Professorof Tsinghua University and specially-invited expert, as well as Liu Junguo, Professorof SUSTech/Beijing Forestry University proposed many constructive suggestions toissues in the researches. Professor Zheng Chunmiao made his summary of thisconference and put forward his expectations.

About “Heiheriver project”

Heihe River originates fromChi-lien Mountains in Qinghai province, flows through oasis irrigatedagricultural area in Hexi Corridor. Its northern part passes gobi and ends at Juyanlake basin at Sino-Mongolian border. In recent decades, contradiction between agriculturalwater of midstream and ecological water of downstream in this drainage basinhas been aggravated and ecological problems such as desertification, salinization, wetland degradation of lakes have become serious due to the climaticvariation and irrational utilization of water resources. Considering theimportance and typicality of issues on water resources in Heihe river basin andecology, in 2010, National Natural Science Foundation of China has launched majorresearch plan “integrated research of eco-hydrological process in Heihe riverbasin” (can be called “Heihe river project” for short). In this project, ProfessorZheng Chunmiao has taken over the integrated project of midstream and downstreamin Heihe river basin “research of system behavior and regulation regarding eco-hydrologicalprocess of midstream and downstream in Heihe river basin”.

Briefintroduction to Environmental Science and Engineering College of SUSTech

Environmental Science and Engineering College of SUSTech (can be called “Environmental College” forshort) takes the establishment of international first-class base for environmentaleducation and scientific research as its development target and devotes to thecultivation of complex talents on environment subject with innovative thinking, international horizon and modern engineering literacy. The teaching andscientific researches of the College mainly concentrate on four directions: waterresources and water environment, environmental remediation, reclamation of solidwastes and earth system science. Dean of the college is Zheng Chunmiao who is afamous expert in groundwater environment field. The faculty of the College now all studied or worked abroadonce. In recent five years, they have published over 300 SCI articles including4 articles published on Science, Nature and PNAS which are top journals in theworld and undertaken over 70 scientific research projects of national level, provincialand municipal level including Natural Science Foundation of China, national 973program, 863 program and national sci-tech support plan. In addition, InnovativeCenter of Engineering Technology (Beijing) of SUSTech is the research base of industry-university-researchcooperation in the College, which devotes to researching and developingadvanced environmental protection technologies such as water treatment, environmental remediation, energy conservation and emissions reduction as wellas positively promotes the industrialization of achievements in scientificresearch.
