School of Environmental Science and Engineering Research Team Win Gov. Funding from Local “Peacock Talent Plan”

Recently, the teams listed in Shenzhen “Peacock Plan” were published to the public. Of the twelve teams (the 1st batch of 2016) on the list, half are from SUSTech. Six SUSTech teams will receive government funding of 190 million Yuan, with the total amount for all twelve being 345 million Yuan. The research fields of 2016 “Peacock Plan” teams cover strategic new industries and future industries that Shenzhen strongly supports, namely, new generation of information technology (NGIT), biology, new energy, new material, health, etc.  

           

The team of highly-efficient thermoelectric conversion materials and devices led by Professor He Jiaqing from the Department of Physics, SUSTech, has been approved of 20 million Yuan as research funding. Core members of this team are Zhao Li, Zhang Liyuan and Huangli. They will develop high-performance thermoelectric conversion materials and devices which could be extensively applied to transportation, telecommunication, medical service, scientific research, environmental protection and space industry. As a major breakthrough for relevant industries, their research will largely improve Shenzhen’s technology, thus facilitating its technological, economic and social progress.  

Professor Michael Deem from the Department of Biology, SUSTech, with his team of the third-generation gene sequencer development and industrialization, has been authorized 40 million Yuan for their research. They have nine core team members: He Jiankui, Chen Yonglong, Zhang Hongmin, Cao Huiling, Li Xiaoxu, Andrew Hutchins, Gao Yan, Zhao Luyang and Jin Yan. They will adopt unimolecule target technology, which is the third-generation product for sequencing. The sequencer they develop will mainly be used in hospitals and is hoped to be the standard configuration for clinical X-ray diagnosis, so as to achieve targeted prevention and treatment of cancers, major chronic diseases, birth defects, and rare diseases and so on.        

The X-LED innovation team for advanced lighting and display technology, led by Professor Sun Xiaowei from the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, will obtain 40 million Yuan for their research. They have four core members, including Guo Haozhong, Renard Bachelot, Liu Yanjun and Aung Ko Ko Kyaw. This team will establish a platform for the packaging, processing, R&D and industrialization of X-LED materials and devices, and devote themselves to resolving the key technological challenges in applying X-LED as lighting and display. With a goal of developing X-LED lighting and display technology with an independent IPR of their own, the team strives to be the Game Changer and lead the next age of innovation in this field.     

Associate Professor Quan Zhi from the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, together with his research team of intelligent wireless terminal Detection technology, will get a financial aid of 20 million Yuan. With Gong Yi, Wu Dapeng, Liu Cong and Rex Hon being the core members, this team’s intelligent wireless terminal detection technology will be broadly employed in the R&D, manufacturing and accreditation of all kinds of intelligent terminals, such as smart phones, UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle), robot, wearable devices and equipment of Internet of Things. This team aims at breaking the monopoly of technology by foreign countries and realize the domestication, intellectualization and automation of wireless detective devices, thus becoming the first manufacturer of wireless detective devices in China.      

Professor Zheng Chunmiao of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering and his team working on comprehensive treatment of polluted water have been approved of 30 million Yuan as research fund. The major members include Liu Chongxuan and Tang Yuanyuan. Their research will focus on the comprehensive improvement of polluted waters, develop and integrate key technologies on the pollution control of surface water, underground water, sediment and the waste water from sewage plants. This will provide practical technical support for Shenzhen’s uphill battle of pollution control and water improvement, so that the city may accomplish its tasks and goals on water improvement, thus realizing its vision of building a “Beautiful Shenzhen”.    

Professor Wang Haijiang from the Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering, with his team on automotive fuel cell and electric pile technology development, has obtained a financial aid of 40 million Yuan. His team is made up of four core members, namely, Li Hui, Yu Peng, Zhu Weimin and Hamidreza Sadeghifar. Their team will take advantage of the worldwide most advanced fuel cell and electric pile technology to start a business in Shenzhen. This will realize the domestication of this technology in its kind, filling the gap of commercialization in the field in China. Based on the electric pile technology, the team will develop different applications of fuel cell and create an industrial chain of Hydrogen energy and fuel cell, making Shenzhen a pioneer in the era of Hydrogen economy.    

To this day, ten teams from SUSTech have been listed in the Shenzhen “Peacock Plan”.
