The International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) recently announced the recipients of the 2023 International Hydrology Prize.

Junguo LIU, Chair Professor of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering (ESE) at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), was awarded the Volker medal of this year’s International Hydrology Prize in recognition of his innovative contributions in the field of international hydrological sciences.

The award is jointly issued by IAHS, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). It is the highest academic award in the international hydrological science community, and will be presented at the 28^th International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics General Assembly (IUGG2023) in Berlin, Germany, on July 15.

Prof. Junguo LIU is a member of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences (SATW) and the European Academy of Sciences, and a winner of the Outstanding Young Scientist from the National Science Foundation of China. He is also a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Royal Geographical Society, UK, and the Royal Meteorological Society.

He has long been engaged in scientific research and teaching on water resources and ecological restoration. In the protection and utilization of water resources, he proposed the three-dimensional water scarcity assessment and the framework of stepwise ecological restoration.

Prof. LIU has published more than 270 papers in scientific journals such as Nature, Science, PNAS, Nature Climate Change, Nature Communications, Nature Sustainability, and Science Advances. He has also been selected in the list of the world’s Highly Cited Researchers.

The International Hydrology Prize was established in 1979 and is awarded annually. As of 2014, two medals have been awarded under the International Hydrology Prize: The Dooge medal and the Volker medal. They are intended to reward hydrological scientists who have made outstanding contributions to global hydrological sciences and scientific practice.
